UX Speakeasy is a 501(c)3 nonprofit community for UX practitioners in San Diego and Orange County. This policy explains what personal information we collect through our website, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Our website address is https://uxspeakeasy.com.
Account and directory profile information. When you create an account to get listed in our member directory, we collect what you provide: your name, chapter (San Diego or Orange County), job title, LinkedIn URL, specialization, skills, a short bio, "open to" preferences (mentoring, speaking, hosting), and an optional profile photo or featured image. Community and Member tier profiles are shown publicly in our directory; you can edit or remove this information at any time from your account page.
Event check-in and attendance. When you check in at an event, we record your name, email, and which event you attended. We use this to recognize returning community members on our "Familiar Faces" wall and to show your own attendance history on your account page. If you check in as a guest without an account, that record stays private until you create an account and claim it.
Membership and payments. If you become a paying Member ($5/month, free for students) or make a purchase from our shop, your payment is handled entirely by Square, our payment processor. We never see or store your full card number — we only receive confirmation that a payment succeeded and your resulting subscription status.
Newsletter, volunteer, and other sign-ups. If you sign up for our newsletter, or express interest in volunteering, hosting an event, speaking, or sponsoring, we collect your name and email address (and anything else you enter in that form). Getting listed, volunteering, or submitting an event/speaker/sponsor lead is the main purpose of those forms; being added to our email list is a separate, optional step — each of those forms has its own checkbox asking you to opt in before we share your information with Brevo, our email service provider, for that purpose. (The newsletter sign-up forms are the one exception, since signing up for the newsletter is the entire point of that form — checking that form's box and clicking Sign up is itself the opt-in.) Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.
Log data. Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically logs standard technical information, such as IP address and browser type, for security and troubleshooting purposes.
If you're located in the EEA, UK, or another jurisdiction with similar data protection laws, here's the legal basis we rely on for each way we use your information:
We don't use advertising or marketing cookies, and nothing on this site requires cookie consent under GDPR's e-privacy rules. If you create an account, your browser stores a small amount of data — via local storage, not a cookie — so you stay signed in between visits. That data isn't shared with anyone and clears when you sign out.
Some pages link out to third-party sites we don't control — for example Meetup or Eventship for event RSVPs, Square for our online shop, and IxDA.org for our video library. Visiting those sites is subject to their own privacy policies, not this one.
We don't sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers that help us run UX Speakeasy, and only with what each one needs to do its job:
International transfers. These providers may process or store data on servers outside your country, including in the United States. Where that applies, each provider is responsible for maintaining appropriate safeguards for that transfer (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) under their own agreements with us. Contact us if you'd like more detail on a specific provider's safeguards.
We keep your account and directory information for as long as your account is active, and delete it if you close your account or ask us to. Event attendance records are kept indefinitely so we can recognize returning community members over time. Newsletter and volunteer sign-up information is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove it.
If you have an account with us, you can view or edit most of your information directly from your account page at any time. Depending on where you live, you may also have some or all of the following rights, which you can exercise by contacting us:
We'll respond to any request within a reasonable time, and in any case within the timeframe required by applicable law. If you're not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
UX Speakeasy is intended for working professionals and students in design-related fields. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
We may update this policy from time to time as our website and services change. We'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page whenever we do.
